The Doumer Apartments on Route Doumer (now Donghu Lu). Designed in 1941 by Alexandre Kooklin and financed by Shlema Shimonovitch Moshinsky and his son Abe, the owners of the Shanghai Card Board Box Factory. Among others the factory produced packaging for the famous Hazelwood ice cream. Shlema's grandson Sam Moshinksy - a true Shanghailander - was born in 1934 and documented his childhood and youth growing up in old Shanghai in the book "Goodbye Shanghai"...

The My Dear, or Měilì (美丽牌) cigarettes brand by Hwa Ching Tobacco (华成烟草股份有限公司) was famous for its advertisements depicting modern Chinese girls, often alone and frequently assertive, exhibiting an individuality and independence missing from the traditional pictorial genre. A Chinese version of the Mae West-style no-nonsense female - the epitome of the modern Shanghai lass.

Frigidaire developed the first self-contained refrigerator, invented by Nathanniel B. Wales and Alfred Mellowes in 1916. The brand was so well known in the refrigeration field in the early-to-mid-1900s, that many Americans called any refrigerator a Frigidaire regardless of brand. In France, Canada, and some other French-speaking countries or areas, the word Frigidaire is often in use as a synonym today.
