Novartis is one of world’s largest pharma corporations and was formed in 1996 by the merger of Ciba-Geigy & Sandoz – originally three independent businesses all from the same small town of Basel, which is strategically located in Switzerland on the border to France and Germany. This German-language advertisement booklet from our collection is by itself a bit of a conundrum, but also reminds us of a puzzling episode that happened at the hotel during the Battle of Shanghai in 1937.
Gail Borden invented the process to create condensed milk in 1853. Nestlé licenced the product and in 1874 "EAGLE Sweetened Condensed Milk by assignment of the Borden company", was the first brand ever to be trademarked and sold in China by Nestlé. A Nestlé sales office was later opened in Shanghai in 1908.
